HINDERER KNIVES

About Rick Hinderer

Rick Hinderer General Information

Guarantee

All RICK HINDERER KNIVES products are guaranteed against material defects and workmanship, and they carry a life time warranty. Our guarantee is void if the knife has been abused beyond normal wear and tear, or used beyond what are considered normal parameters for the tool.  If you do have a problem with your knife, it will be left up to us whether to repair or replace damaged or defective items.

Warranty

All RICK HINDERER KNIVES products carry a limited warranty for the serviceable lifetime of the product. We guarantee our knives, pens and tools against manufacturing defects in materials, construction and to perform as advertised when maintained and used properly.  Our Warranty does not cover normal signs of wear, rust, damage or breakage due to improper use, improper modification, or lack of maintenance.  We cannot cover lost fasteners or hardware under warranty, but we do sell those parts. Any product we determine to be defective will be repaired or replaced at our discretion. To receive warranty repair or replacement, the owner must send the product to us to be evaluated.  No other warranties are implied or expressed other than what is specifically stated here.

User modifications to folding knives that are not covered under warranty:  Modifying or altering the detent in the blade or lockside, the lockface itself, the blade tang, thumbstud, and lockbar cutout.  If modifications like these are performed on your knife they can ruin the lock up and or action of your folding knife.  These modifications could render the knife unsafe.

3rd Party Anodizing:  We cannot warranty a knife that has been heat anodized with a torch.  HOWEVER we will not void your warranty for using DC current to electro-anodize your titanium parts.

Using Aftermarket Fasteners and Parts:  You are welcome to change your knife hardware without voiding your warranty.  Example:  Titanium clip screws are a common upgrade, installing a set would not void your warranty.  The only case that would cause a warranty issue would be using improper hardware that would cause an issue with the knife that otherwise would not be there if you had the stock Hinderer parts installed.

Bevel Re-Grinds:  If you have your bevels reground by someone else we will not void your warranty unless the grind has a direct impact on the problem with your knife.  For instance if you had someone grind the tang to change the lock up and a problem with the lock occurred, there would be a cost associated to fix the problem caused by someone else.

If we determine that it is something other than a defect in workmanship or materials, we will inform you if the product can be repaired and your cost. If your knife has been abused or has seen hard use for a long period of time, it is possible that the useful life of the product has been exceeded.

***A side note for those of you who can’t flip your knife open to your liking, this is not a warranty or service issue. There are plenty of threads on the subject in our online forums at bladeforums.com  and usualsuspects.net  as well as youtube videos that can help you. Oil, pivot adjustments, and technique is where you will find your answers….The same goes for blade centering, lots of threads and info on the forums to help you out

Knife Refurbishing

We offer 3 types of Cosmetic Refurbs – Bead Blast, Sand Blast, and Tumbled, we no longer refurb satin blade finishes. Most complete refurbs run around $65.00 + shipping. Before you send a knife to us, please contact us prior for details. We do refurbs when time and opportunity present themselves so we can provide a quick turnaround. It is not an open door policy, because there are times when we won’t be able to get right to it and we don’t want it to sit here in the shop.

**Rick is no longer refurbishing custom – satin finished blades**

Services we do not offer:

  • We will not change the original finish, so for example we won’t tumble a knife that was originally blasted
  • We do not do “custom” detent work, meaning we do not make detents lighter or stiffer, all folders are made to a certain spec, however it may not be absolutely perfect for “you”.  An example would be for those of you that have trouble flipping your knife without using wrist, we do not stiffen detents.  Or in the case of someone who finds the detent too stiff, we do not lighten them either.
  • We do not change or alter the lock bar engagement.
  • We do not do regrinds of any sort
  • We do not mark blade steel types after the knife has left the shop
  • We do not have a stripped screw removal service. Big boy rules apply, you strip it, you remove it.
  • We do not re-finish, or re-coat DLC Coated knives or knife parts

General Information regarding XM-18 sales

We do sell production XM-18’s directly to current / active military personnel and first responders and we offer a 10% discount. All other XM-18 sales go through our dealers. Hand ground custom knives are primarily available at knife shows throughout the year. We do not take orders for hand ground customs.  Sorry to our northern neighbors, but we do not sell or ship knives to Canada.

Retail Prices for XM Folding Knives

Production Models: XM-18 3″ $425 – XM-18 3.5″ $425 – XM-24 $595

Military – Law Enforcement – Fire – EMT/EMS

Rick decided years ago to stop taking orders directly for XM folders, but left it open for military, law enforcement, fire, EMT/EMS personnel so they had quick access to tools they require in the field. Direct orders are prioritized based on if you have ordered from us in the past, and the frequency. If you are someone who has had the chance to have already purchased one directly from us, you will have to wait for us to work through the first timers. First time orders will get the priority, if there are knives left from the particular batch after those orders are processed we will address folks that have purchased previously. There is a limit to one knife per person per batch. We allow each individual to purchase 1-2 knives a year, and a maximum of 3 knives total under the program.  Knives purchased direct from us through flash sales are taken into account as well.

We ask that you do not buy knives for your buddies under the program, you are taking knives out of the hands of other serving first responders that you should consider your brothers, have some respect for the system please. Someday, if we can get closer to meeting demand, we won’t need this program in place, we’ll be able to sell knives to everyone, but until then, please use some integrity when purchasing. If we find this the case, and you are, we simply won’t sell you knives

The following CURRENT/ACTIVE personnel can order direct from us:
MILITARY – LEO – FIRE – EMT – EMS

We will ask that you verify your current employment with us prior to ordering. If you do not have an ID from one of the above fields, you are not qualified to order direct from us.
LEO/FIRE/EMT: We will request a copy of your ID, and/or a letter on Department Letterhead to verify employment. Active Military members: you can simply write us from your .mil address.  If you do not have a .mil email you may also provide a Statement of Service from your local personnel office in the form of a signed letter confirming military status, or a written statement from your chain of command.

Depending on in-stock availability, when ordering a folder you will have a choice between a flipper or non-flipper and your choice of a Spanto or Slicer Blade Style. Also you will have your choice of G10 handle scale color. All direct order knives ship with our standard tumbled finish, there are no options for custom finishes.

Parts

We do sell the following knife hardware – handle screws, clip screws, pivot screws, pivot washers, and filler tabs.

We DO NOT sell: Folding knife blades, locksides, liners, pivots, stop pins, thumbstuds,  standard titanium pocket clips or handle nuts. If your knife requires one of these parts contact us for service.

Knife Care

Minimal care is all that is required to insure the maximum potential from your knife. Cleaning your knife periodically along with lubrication with a light oil is all that is needed, especially after exposure to salt water or an acidic environment.

We use premium stainless cutlery steels in all of our knives. Stainless steel provides outstanding edge retention and corrosion resistance, but can rust if not cared for. It is possible for rust to form when your knife is used in or around salt water, exposed to moisture, or simply neglected. If exposed to salt water, thoroughly rinse the knife with fresh water, and then dry completely and apply a light coat of oil to all steel parts.
It is a good idea to regularly inspect the interior of the knife for dirt and grime. Clean inside the handle with a Q-Tip and water with a small amount of detergent or mild soap. Rinse everything thoroughly, dry the knife inside and out and oil all of the steel components. A couple drops of lubricant around the pivot will slick up the action nicely.

Sharpening

A sharp knife is a happy knife, and sharp knives makes cutting safer and easier. You should maintain your knifes edge regularly, the more it is used and the duller the edge becomes the more difficult it is to sharpen. We do not promote one particular method or sharpening system, but there are numerous available.
We do offer sharpening as a service, the cost is $15 and that includes return shipping in the USA, please drop us a line for the details.

Knockoff / Counterfeit / Fakes

RICK HINDERER KNIVES designs are increasingly being copied by unscrupulous foreign manufacturers and we feel we have a major role in protecting our customers from knockoffs.

Counterfeit products strangle innovation, create unfair competition, they do economic harm to businesses, and of course they mislead consumers into purchasing poorly made, cheaply priced fakes. These substandard built products, especially knives can be a safety hazard. We will use all legal means to hold those accountable who manufacture, distribute and /or sell counterfeit RICK HINDERER KNIVES products.

  • In the mid 1980’s Rick Hinderer began his knife making journey making art knives in a small 14′ x 18′ turkey coop with none of the modern amenities, like heat or running water! Art knives are a far cry from the tactical scene which Rick is so deeply entrenched in now. Over the years his meticulous attention to knife design and knife making, coupled with his real world experience as a Fire Fighter / EMT sets him apart from the rest. Rick’s design philosophy is deeply rooted in his experience with using his knives as part of his first responder tools. That catalyst of change from art knives to hard use tactical was after Rick joined the rescue dive team. He really began to look at knives and designs more as hard use tactical tools than works of art.  Rick began changing over from old world knife making techniques to modern CNC precision manufacturing.  With the combination of designing art knives, and his real world experience as a first responder, this unusual perspective allows him to design hard use tactical folders that are not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but extremely comfortable in the hand. All of Rick’s products are engineered to go the distance when it counts the most whether it be when life is on the line, or you just need a good cutting tool!
